What is the purpose of the workshop?

As Christians, our purpose is to serve and share the gospel. Therefore, to be proper representatives of Christ, we MUST “study to show thyself approved” (II Timothy 2:15). This includes God’s word, and our gifts and talents as God uses them for ministry. Therefore, it is imperative that we are conscious stewards over God’s property.

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce theography – the study of God and dance- with a strong emphasis on exploring various dance techniques.

 Why Theography?

Theography is a concept and style of dance that illustrates the gospel as accurately and creatively as possible through movement and communication. It is an eclectic discipline, incorporating genres such as modern, jazz, African Caribbean, contemporary, liturgical, ballet, mime, and many other dance techniques. In addition, theography includes forms of communication such as sign language, gestures, theatrics, and expressions.   Its purpose is to stimulate mind (the intellect), body (our temple), and spirit, (the essence of who we are).

Ascension’s dance workshop will include daily theography classes and a gospel aerobics class for all workshop participants.  In addition, the workshop will offer instruction and demonstration of the following techniques: hip-hop, liturgical, modern, sign, and step. All classes will enhance dance technique and precision with emphasis on footwork, balance, body placement, execution, and presentation.

Gospel Aerobics On Friday, July 9th and Saturday, July 10th we will offer a gospel aerobics class
for   adults only (13 and up) led by Group X instructor and personal trainer of 24 Hour Fitness  -  our very own Ascension company member, Wanel Thomas.
Praise Dance Showcase! On Saturday, July 10th, we will have special guest, Elder Trent Von Lee - former member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, facilitate the praise dance showcase where he will provide constructive advice to various praise dance groups/soloists.  The praise dance showcase is limited to 15 praise dance groups/soloists and a 5 minute time limitation for each group or soloist to present a dance selection - please bring your song selection on CD. If you are a praise dance group or soloist that would like to participate in the showcase, you may register your group in advance by submitting an email to  First come, first serve!

“Garments of praise Geared for worship”: is a lecture demonstration that will examine the biblical history of dance; discuss practical means of how to begin, nurture and maintain an effective dance ministry and building choreography for worship.  We will discuss sacred dance as a spiritual weapon with the power to invoke the presence of God and destroy yolks of the enemy and how we are to prepare and dress as liturgical dancers to carry out our worship assignment.  Trent Von Lee, Farmington, CT
Lunch provided! That’s right – we will be providing sacked lunches for all workshop participants to refuel our temples!
